Jules Verne Doty Jr.

Private graveside services for Jules Verne Doty Jr., 82, Ottawa, will be at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.Mr. Doty died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at Aberdeen Village Inc. in Olathe.He was born Oct. 29, 1923, in Treece, the son of Jules Verne and Irene Jane Gatliff Doty.Mr. Doty grew up in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II in Czechoslovakia, Germany and France. He earned undergraduate and law degrees from Washburn University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.He became Cherokee County attorney and worked in a variety of jobs including temporary postmaster, Columbus Bank cashier and Dale Carnegie course instructor. He moved to Ottawa in 1958 and joined Thomas and Doug Gleason in the practice of law.Mr. Doty was appointed to the Kansas Corporation Commission and served as its commissioner from 1968 to 1974. He later was a national tax attorney for the Kansas Department of Revenue. He served as a district judge in the 4th Judicial District of Kansas from June 20, 1983, until he retired Dec. 15, 1995.He was active in Democratic politics, running as a candidate for statewide office and serving as congressional district chairman for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. He also was active in First Christian Church of Ottawa.He married Martha Lea Meriwether on June 3, 1947. She died July 1, 1995. Survivors include a son, Mark, Olathe; two daughters, Sara Miller, De Soto, and Julie Lemons, Salina; and five grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Ottawa Country Club.
