L. Don Scheid 1924 - 2005
Memorial services for L. Don Scheid, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. Mr. Scheid died Saturday, May 14, 2005, in Lawrence.He was born Nov. 14, 1924, in Sandusky, Ohio.A renowned clarinet player, Mr. Scheid earned both his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degrees from Michigan State University. After studying with Joseph Siniscalchi of the Chicago Symphony and Chicago Opera House, and George Silfies of the St. Louis Symphony, he moved to Lawrence in 1955 to become a member of the School of Fine Arts faculty at Kansas University. There, Mr. Scheid taught courses in clarinet, ensemble and music education. He served as an assistant professor and assistant dean from 1961 to 1964, as associate professor and assistant dean from 1964-1970, and as professor and associate dean from 1970 until his retirement in 1990.Mr. Scheid performed extensively throughout the county, delivering over 100 solo performances. He was a member of the Faculty Woodwind Quintet, the Music Teachers National Assn. and the Kansas Music Teachers Assn. He also served as the state chairman of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors. Mr. Scheid was the voice of the Marching Jayhawks from 1958 to 1989, and received the Sudler Award for his role.He also served on the boards of United Fund, the Plymouth Congregational Church and as an Explorer Sports Sponsor.Mr. Scheid also was active in the armed forces, serving for 35 years in the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserve. That service included five years of active duty, and 10 years as Squadron Commander of the 442nd Tactical Airlift Wing.He married Marian Keller in 1949. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Steve, San Francisco; two daughters, Marilee Groth, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Lynda Paul, Tulsa, Okla.; and a sister, Virginia Medema, Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.The family suggests memorials to the L. Don Scheid Scholarship Fund at KU or to the American Lung Assn., sent in care of the mortuary.
