Despite canceling school for three inclement-weather days, the Lawrence district will not have to add a day to the school year.

However, schools will be in session on the scheduled makeup day of April 19, district spokeswoman Julie Boyle said via email.

“Since we built the April 19 make-up day into the school calendar and plan to use it, the Kansas State Department of Education ‘forgives’ us the second inclement weather day used,” she wrote.

Even with the third day, Boyle said the calendar meets the 1,116 hours of instructional time the state requires.

If there were another bad-weather day, Boyle said she doesn’t know how close the district is to the required instructional minutes at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

“If we would fall under that threshold, though, the school board would have to determine how to make up the time,” Boyle wrote. “In the recent past, previous school boards have added minutes to the remaining days of the school year to make up time.”
