A Lawrence High School student allegedly brought a gun to school Wednesday, according to an email from district spokeswoman Julie Boyle to parents.

“Thanks to several LHS students reporting to staff that they had heard this student may have brought a weapon to school, the administration was able to work with the school resource officers to conduct a search and confiscate the weapon,” the email said.

There was no incident with the gun, and no students or staff were threatened with it, according to the email.

The school is contacting parents and “taking disciplinary action in accordance with Board Policy,” according to the email.

In an email response to follow-up questions from the Journal-World, Boyle wrote, “In order to protect student privacy rights, the district does not share identifying information related to student disciplinary matters.”

School administration notified police after they found a male student in possession of a gun, Lawrence Police Officer Derrick Smith said in an email response to questions from the Journal-World.

“The male juvenile was arrested for possession of a firearm on school grounds,” Smith said.

He said an affidavit on the case will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office.

Wednesday’s incident was the fourth time in the past year that a gun was reported in possession of a student on the grounds of a high school in Lawrence.

In April 2018, a 17-year-old boy brought a loaded handgun in his backpack to Free State High School. He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor in September, and a judge later sentenced him to serve six months of probation.

In mid-September, two students at Lawrence High School reportedly exchanged a stolen handgun on the high school’s campus. The student who ended up with the gun pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge earlier this week. A case is pending against the teen who allegedly stole the gun.

Later in September, police investigated after a gun was found under the seat of a student’s vehicle at Free State High. Police said the gun was allegedly used in a hunting trip and then left, unloaded, under a seat of the vehicle. Police forwarded the case to the district attorney’s office, but it wasn’t immediately clear Wednesday whether charges were ever filed.
