Bicyclist dies after suffering medical incident; appears no vehicle struck him, police say

A bicyclist died Wednesday after suffering a medical incident of some kind, according to Lawrence police.

Officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Brook Street around 5 p.m. Wednesday for a possible injury accident, Lawrence Police Department spokesperson Patrick Compton said via email Thursday. There, officers found an unconscious 49-year-old Lawrence man who had fallen and was suffering from unknown injuries, Compton said.

Emergency radio traffic monitored by the Journal-World initially indicated that a vehicle may have struck the man; Compton said there did not appear to be any motor vehicles involved.

First responders performed life-saving measures at the scene, and the man was taken to the hospital; he later died of apparent natural causes, Compton said.
