A man has been charged in a sexual assault case stemming from crimes that allegedly occurred in 2017 in Douglas County.

Steven W. Seyfarth, 23, of Batavia, Ill., was arrested on the charges in downtown Lawrence, according to Douglas County Jail records.

The charges were filed Feb. 7 in Douglas County District Court. Seyfarth is scheduled to appear before a judge March 12. Court records indicate he was released from jail last week after posting $50,000 bond.

Seyfarth is charged with two counts of rape, a felony, for allegedly assaulting a victim who was unconscious or physically powerless in early May 2017, according to the complaint. He’s also charged with two counts of sexual battery, a misdemeanor, involving the same 22-year-old victim on the same dates.

According to the complaint, the Lawrence Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the case, but both agencies declined to release details about the allegations Monday. According to Lawrence police activity logs, a sex crime report related to the case was made to Lawrence police in September of 2017.
