The crash happened just before 2 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the Turnpike, about 3 miles west of the Lecompton exit, according to a preliminary crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The minivan struck the ambulance, causing the minivan to spin and hit the wall, according to the report. The minivan then struck the ambulance again, causing the minivan to cross all lanes of traffic and come to rest in the ditch.

The minivan’s driver, a 79-year-old Topeka man, and his passenger, a 73-year-old Topeka woman, were both injured and taken to a hospital, according to the highway patrol. They were wearing seat belts.

The ambulance driver, a 33-year-old Wamego man, was not injured, according to the report. He also was wearing a seat belt. A Turnpike dispatcher said that the ambulance was from Riley County and was not carrying a patient.
