After a weeklong trial, a jury has convicted a man in connection with a 2017 aggravated robbery in Lawrence.
The jury heard evidence last week and delivered its verdict Monday, according to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. Norris M. Hunter, 37, of Lawrence, was found guilty on all counts.
Depending on his criminal history, Hunter could face up to 29 years in prison, said Dorothy Kliem, trial assistant for the DA’s office.
His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 1.
On March 6, 2017, Hunter was armed with “a handgun or what appeared to be a handgun” when he entered an apartment at 2001 W. Sixth St. and stole cash, drugs and other items from two people inside, according to the criminal complaint against him. He also caused bodily harm to the victims, and took additional items belonging to a third victim.
In the following months, Hunter intimidated a witness to dissuade him from cooperating with authorities.
The jury convicted Hunter of two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary, felonies, as well as two counts of battery and one count of theft, misdemeanors, according to appointed defense attorney Joshua Seiden.
Hunter entered a plea of no contest and was convicted of intimidating a witness, a misdemeanor, Seiden said.
Hunter’s brother, 38-year-old Tavaras L. Hunter, of Lawrence, also is charged in the same incident. His case is still pending.
Norris Hunter already has served prison time for a past robbery, which he committed in 2004 in Douglas County, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the severity level of Hunter’s convictions and to indicate he entered a plea on one count.
