Heavy snow, subzero wind chills possible this weekend in Lawrence

About 3 to 5 inches of snow could fall on the Lawrence area this weekend, and bitter cold will follow.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory for Douglas County and the surrounding area from this evening through Sunday morning.

Snow may begin Saturday evening, with the heaviest snowfall expected after midnight through Sunday morning. Winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour may cause some blowing snow tonight and into the day Sunday. Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 30s today before falling to around 15 degrees tonight. Sunday’s high temperature may only reach 16 degrees, and wind chill readings during the snowstorm may range from 2 above zero to 6 below.

Cold weather is expected to stick around through Sunday and into Monday, with overnight lows reaching 1 below. Monday’s high temperature is expected to stay in the mid-teens, with wind chill readings from 7 below to 17 below zero.
