Lawrence High girls, Free State boys win City Showdown track and field dual

Lawrence High track and field coach Jack Hood congratulates Amaya Harris on a personal-best throw in the javelin at the City Showdown track and field dual on Wednesday at LHS.

A small meet didn’t keep Lawrence High senior Hunter Krom from putting together a big performance in Wednesday’s City Showdown track and field dual against Free State at LHS.

Krom’s second throw in the javelin competition sailed 202 feet, 8 inches — which was less than two feet off his personal best. It took a while for Krom to officially find out his mark because the tape measure being used only went to 200 feet.

Krom was one of several athletes in midseason form at the City Showdown. The LHS boys went on to fall to the Firebirds, 99-56. The Lions won the dual on the girls side, 102-53.

“I’ve been doing a lot of work with my block and my pole,” Krom said. “I felt a lot better.”

There were also some issues with measuring Krom’s first throw. Krom was originally told that it went 228 feet, which would have set a school record. While it went on to be 25 feet short of that, the school record is among Krom’s goals by season’s end.

The LHS boys did most of their damage in the field events. Bryce Tibke won the shot put and the discus, and Declan Oberzan and Van Dave Jacob added respective first-place finishes in the pole vault and long jump. Dre Bridges paced the Lions on the track with wins in the 100-and 200-meter dashes.

The Free State boys took care of business in the rest of the track events. The Firebirds won all three relays. Gabe del Valle (400), Aidan Goertz (800), Charlie Johnson (1,600), John Loos (3,200), Josh Moore (110 hurdles) and Bryce Clough (300 hurdles) posted first-place times. Kwinton Lassiter (triple jump) and Michael Pettie (high jump) won field event titles.

While the dual marked the second meet for the Lions, it was the debut for the Firebirds. Senior Cameryn Thomas is looking to be one of the leaders on the FSHS girls squad.

Thomas won the 100 hurdles and the long jump, but had some nerves in one of her other events. During the offseason, Thomas added the 300 hurdles to her repertoire. The FSHS senior finished second to LHS senior Talima Harjo.

“I like it a lot,” Thomas said. “I like trying new things.”

Auna Childress (triple jump) and Kala Ewing (discus) accounted for Free State’s other first-place finishes.

The LHS girls swept the relays. Ashley Wildeman (100), Asjah Harris (200), Ozi Ajekwu (400), Evann Seratte (800), Hannah Stewart (1,600), Layne Prescott (3,200) and Harjo won their respective events.

Josie Hickerson (pole vault), Krissy Howard (shot put), Asjah Harris (high jump) and Amaya Harris (javelin) won for the Lions in the field events.

“I think that this LHS track team is going to do pretty good this year,” Amaya Harris, who set a personal record in the javelin, said.
