Letter to the editor: Better comments

March 26, 2018

To the editor:

After having been a subscriber since 1993 and mostly happy with new ownership, I have one complaint. Have a moderator approve posts and ban some fanatical abusers of the Journal-World’s website. I no longer even log in online to read your newspaper other than reading my “online news on the go,” which I pay for. The forums are, unfortunately, overwhelmed by highly partisan, single-minded people who feel that everyone must think like them or must be verbally attacked for thinking otherwise.

There was a time when LJW enforced a degree of civility on this site. Gone are the days.

Michael Kort 2 months ago

Wait,......Wait OUIJA BOARD is trying to tell us all something .........something.........i can hardly make it out !..........." WOW ! ! !........YOU JUST NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL APPEAR NEXT ON A OUIJA BOARD........... or in the comments section on the LJW .

Your caps lock is sticking again, Michael.

scuse me....what is a "better comment"

Jes curious

Daniel Kennamore 2 months ago

Pretty much every comment not made by you the other Bob or Brocky.

Ron Holzwarth 2 months ago

A "better comment" is one that uses concise writing and does one of three main things:

1) A comment that makes a point by point response to another comment, followed by logical reasons for the commenter's point of view, without any personal attacks. Only the mildest refutations of statements made by another commenter should be done, and that should be done in a very polite fashion.

2) In many cases a comment is not a response to another comment, in which case logical points should be made, followed by factual statements and conclusions explaining why the commenter is sure his/her conclusions are true.

3) All comments should have an ending paragraph or statement summing it up.

Of course, there are many other aspects of a "better comment," and you learn these as you comment upon the site. After a few thousand to many thousands of comments, you can learn how to comment well. Having studied Logic in college helps a great deal.

I've made over 8,000 comments on this site, and a great many of them were well received. It took years to do that.

Here's how we fix everything that is broken in Topeka and Swampington, DC .

Don't vote or read online news because it might not be truthful .......but it might be " very believable "..... which will force one to think and question printed reality...and that is not relaxing or comfortable .

The last big supporter of " more civilized public discussions " in Lawrence, Ks. was Jeremy Farmer........for whatever that is worth ?

Just remember,.....lots of money is spent on voter discouragement efforts because the right wing and religious nuts will always turn out.......but the undecided are variables that the gamey can discourage and play.......and that is how they win the " right " to " screw things up on purpose ".

Look up the undercover videos made that are on Youtube about Cambridge Analytica ( and click past the adds )......who specialize in turning out some voters.....and turning off the voter on buttons of other voters .

RIght wing always turns out, lefties only show up if paid.

Dorothy Hoyt-Reed 2 months ago

Why do you feel the need to lie, Gary? Does it make you feel good?

Bob Smith 2 months ago

Does slinging personal insults make you feel good, Dorothy? It must because you do it so often.

Dorothy Hoyt-Reed 1 month, 4 weeks ago

He accused the liberal posters on here of being paid. I for one have never been paid to post here, and I know several of the liberal posters on here, and they do not get paid to post here. So, he could just be factually wrong, but until he comes on here and says otherwise, then he lied. Do you understand what lying is?

Andrew Applegarth 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Can you point out the comment where he accused you of being paid to post here? I don't recall seeing it.

Dorothy Hoyt-Reed 1 month, 4 weeks ago

"RIght wing always turns out, lefties only show up if paid." Go up to the original post of this thread.

Andrew Applegarth 1 month, 4 weeks ago

I figured it was your lack of reading comprehension again, but thanks for confirming. No where in that comment does he mention posting nor even hint at it.

I believe he was referring to the rallies and protests where many participants have admitted that they were paid for their time and participation rather than being there because they believed in the cause. All of those instances have been left leaning events. I have seen no cases of right leaning events hiring people to swell their ranks, so "RIght wing always turns out, lefties only show up if paid." seems to be a slight exaggeration but obviously too close to the truth for your comfort.

Dorothy Hoyt-Reed 1 month, 4 weeks ago

The subject of the letter is about posting. And would you like to provide evidence that the marchers were paid. I've participated in many marches, including last year's Women's March in DC, and I and everyone I know who went did so on their own dime. Your evidence would have to be legit though. Infowars does not count, because they promote lies all the time.

Andrew Applegarth 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Do you really believe that every comment posted is about the original article/letter and never just about the previous comment in the thread? It would be utterly stupid, but I have to ask.

Further, I did not say all. It does not surprise me that nobody would pay you to attend a march (or post on this web site), but unless you personally knew everybody there that limited information is irrelevant. Of course, I would also have to discount your testimony for the exact reason you claim to discount Infowars.

Now, back to the original question. After the painful experience of reading Michael's post again multiple times, I realize that my guess as to what he meant was probably incorrect, although much closer than your declared "truth". Of course, I said "I believe" to indicate I was not certain whereas you stated in no uncertain terms that you knew exactly what he meant. However, as I mentioned, I found the key in Michael's post. He said "lots of money is spent on voter discouragement efforts because the right wing and religious nuts will always turn out". Based on his poorly written scree, the "turn out" that Michael refers to is turning out to vote. As Gary was responding to this post (which said nothing about posting on this formerly award winning web site or anywhere else), it is more logical to conclude Gary was also referring to voting and not posting. I do apologize for including a faulty guess as to his real meaning, but I stand by my analysis of your conclusion.

Aaron McGrogor 1 month, 4 weeks ago

He is directly responding to a comment about posting. If you're going to go around trying to insult people, you may want to make sure you're not guilty of the same thing you're accusing others of.

Andrew Applegarth 1 month, 4 weeks ago

I must admit that the posting style of Michael Kort makes it hard to understand what he means, but the comment that Gary replied to does not mention posting at all. Care to explain how Michael's comment was about posting?

Aaron McGrogor 1 month, 3 weeks ago

It also does not mention rallies or protests, leaving it up to interpretation.

Andrew Applegarth 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Which is why I said "I believe" to denote that it was my interpretation of what he meant and then explained why I thought that way. Dorothy left herself no such leeway. Then again, you left yourself no leeway either when you declared "He is directly responding to a comment about posting."

Aaron McGrogor 1 month, 3 weeks ago

He was. This argument is getting nowhere.

Andrew Applegarth 1 month, 3 weeks ago

I'm sorry that Michael Kort writes with such poor grammar, but don't blame me for that.

Charles L. Bloss, Jr. 2 months ago

I was told that making people use their real name, would solve these types of problems.

Carl Ellerd 2 months ago

Didn't help. Do you really believe the "Bob's" are using their real names?

Michael Kort 2 months ago

Internet worm hollers, that appear out of nowhere, faster than the speed of light ( or darkness ) to cover the globe ?.....maybe ? doesn't have to be truthful, it just has to be believable by someone who is a brick short of a load, with not enough brains to question what they have read..........sort of like pizzagate and the idiot who went in there shooting his gun to free the children that Hillary enslaved or the whole Crooked Hillary Campaign that Execs at Cambridge Analytica invented and admit to doing so on undercover film playing on Youtube, that Donald parroted for months as if a provable truth......nothing more than PsycOps to discourage non right wing voters from even participating, for lack of a process offering them a clear, unsullied (?) choice .

Humans seek certainty........and what religion is not the only true religion ? ......which isn't just a soft sell ?

Look at the undercover Youtube videos on Cambridge Analytica because they were ( are ) a worldwide effort to manipulate elections ( for hire ) all over the world and many of their subunits that were not in England are alive and well and their services are still for sale to the highest bidder......they even worked for Ted Cruz before he was dumped by them, for the Donald.......and who invented (?) the other one liners like Lying Ted ?.....or Little Marco ? ........The Crooked Clinton Foundation ? called by The Donald, who was clearly caught misusing money from his own Foundation to pay corporate fines on his own personal businesses .

Bob Smith 2 months ago

Shiny .... side .... out ....., Michael.......

Bob Smith 2 months ago

Trying to do a bit of doxxing there, skippy?

Bob Smith 2 months ago

Carl, belief has nothing to do with facts. I'm using my real name.

Bob Smith 2 months ago

From about 2005 to 2008 or so, there was a sense of community on this site. Even a lame OTS question would get 20 to 30 comments. It was possible to "friend" other commenters. Currently, every little mud show needs a geek and the more clicks, the better. I'm half expecting He Who Must Not Be Named to reappear.

Bob Smith 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Do you recall the foot in the bucket?

Greg Cooper 1 month, 4 weeks ago

I guess not. Enlighten me. I love this stuff. (But I am familiar with foot in the mouth syndrome, of which you have reminded me on occasion : o)

Greg Cooper 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Thanks. As you say, "Only in Lawrence..."

Bob Smith 1 month, 4 weeks ago

In other vintage Lawrence oddness: "....An angry Kansas University football player got stuck Wednesday in the drive-through window at Taco Bell after he tried to crawl through it to get to food servers who forgot the chalupa, a taco-like product, in his take-out order...." //

Curtis Martell 1 month, 4 weeks ago

The comments on editorial about comments are a great example of the fanatical abuser's comments ruining the comments section. Good work!

Aaron McGrogor 1 month, 4 weeks ago

There's some snark, but no blatant hostility in my opinion.

Bob Smith 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Dont be so hard on Kort. He's doing the best he can.

Phillip Chappuie 1 month, 4 weeks ago

Sank4ever thread ran for days and hundreds of post. (he was a good man) Liking biscuits ran for days and hundreds of post. Nobody likes football. Nobody. Fun times.

Michael Kort 1 month, 3 weeks ago

If you are 18 years or older and you realize how absurd this discussion forum is as well as how stupid the daily news out of Topeka and Washington is then you need to register and vote them out because if you don't do that job, then who will ?

Bob Smith 1 month, 3 weeks ago

You are possibly the most absurd .... POSTER .... ON...... THIS ...... SITE! You get a failing mark for self awareness.

Carl Ellerd 1 month, 3 weeks ago

"Bob", you appear to have provided a good example of what I wrote my letter about.

Bob Smith 1 month, 3 weeks ago

No need for scare quotes, "Carl". Bob is my name.

Michael Kort 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Perhaps Bob could make a better point above if he could spell it all out in any language other than English on this site ?

If you are a young person get out, register to vote, get your friends to register and vote.....same for adults .

Walking Out & Protesting in Topeka and D.C., is a daily event that the Topeka and Swampington D.C. politicians can live with.......not so for PEOPLE REGISTERING TO VOTE AND VOTING THEM OUT ! ! !

If you are a rural farmer Wake Up because the market and prices for your agricultural products is being destroyed by Trump rather purposefully .

He sank the Trans Pacific Trade Pac, he's working on screwing up both NAFTA and the agricultural market in China for what you sell............and who gets rich from that ? .....and the destruction of demand and prices for American agricultural produce ?.........Gee,...........maybe people who bet against those prices and profit ? you really want to loose the farm ?......behind your WINNER and his Topeka Friends ? ........and WHO IS HE REALLY WINNING FOR ? ? ?

Bob Smith 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Thanks for proving my point, Michael.

Bob Smith 1 month, 3 weeks ago

"...Perhaps Bob could make a better point above if he could spell it all out in any language other than English on this site ?..." I'm still trying to figure out what you mean in this sentence. English is the only language I'm fluent in. I expect that English is also the predominant language of the people who read these threads. Would you prefer Klingon or Elvish? IF .... I .... SHOUTED .... WOULD .... YOU .... UNDERSTAND .... BETTER?

Michael Kort 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Scare quotes ? ? ? ..........That's rich ! ! !..........but not in English .
