Letter to the editor: Sidewalk fairness

To the editor:

As a coalition that envisions communities where we all thrive, LiveWell Lawrence addresses a range of issues focused on improving the health and well-being of Lawrence and Douglas County. One priority is promoting a built environment that is bikeable, walkable and accessible, meeting transportation and recreation needs of all members of the community.

Based on our research on the sidewalk repair program and listening to community concerns, LiveWell believes an effective and equitable approach to sidewalk repair must recognize that:

1) Sidewalks are a critical component of our transportation network.

2) This network supports the health and well-being of everyone, regardless of whether they have a sidewalk on their property.

3) Any policy must be implemented with equity as a guide, avoiding a disproportionate burden or benefit to groups of citizens.

Unfortunately, the program falls short of these principles. We believe we can do better as a community to develop creative solutions that guarantee property owners low costs for sidewalk repairs and offset those cost through city-generated funds, especially for our most vulnerable populations who would be disproportionately impacted by this policy.

LiveWell is committed to continuing to work with the Lawrence community on this issue in order to create the best possible built environment to support the health and well-being of all.
