Letter to the editor: Better gas prices

To the editor:

Cheers to Chad Lawhorn for exposing the ongoing mystery around high gas prices in Lawrence, “A Look at Gas Prices.” Why do we have the highest gasoline prices perhaps in all Kansas? Chad, you cleverly note how passing through “the magic gas portal” brings you to gas 16 cents cheaper only 6 miles away in Eudora. We took advantage of that until I started volunteering in Topeka regularly and could (can still) get the same savings there before I headed home. You documented several towns close by that have lower gas prices but we want to add Leavenworth which we have also found often has significantly lower gas prices.

You also made a very good point that if people did not have to spend so much on gas in Lawrence, they would have more money to spend elsewhere in town and thereby boost the local economy.

After reading your explanation about Casey’s coming here, we really hope for that addition. Numerous letters to the paper from several people and at least one prior Lawhorn column have had no apparent effect on the gas stations that are already in town. Let’s celebrate competition!
