Letter to the editor: ‘Lame duck’ defined

To the editor:

Perhaps Carol Delp should have asked Tom Keegan what he meant by “lame duck.”

Why? Because it has multiple meanings (which I didn’t know till I looked it up) and the one I assumed Tom Keegan meant was the primary way it’s used. In this case, that coach David Beaty was nearing the end of his run at KU. Oh! The horror!

Shame on you, Carol, for assuming the worst. Have you also always assumed that referring to someone as a “lame duck president” is an insult? If so, you’d be wrong. After all, they all become lame ducks in their second term, no matter how great they might be.

I think you owe Tom Keegan an apology. (And, if you didn’t know coach Beaty was nearing the end of his run, then you really haven’t been paying attention.)

Kendall Simmons,

Lawrence
