Crash on South Lawrence Trafficway involved vehicle attempting U-turn, authorities say

A two-vehicle crash on the South Lawrence Trafficway Thursday morning sent one person to the hospital and impeded traffic for over an hour.

The crash occurred shortly after 10:20 a.m. on the Trafficway near the exit to East 1200 Road. Westbound traffic was blocked from Iowa Street to 27th Street because of the collision, but the road reopened by 11:45 a.m., according to Sgt. Kristen Channel of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Channel said a 23-year-old Lawrence man was driving an SUV westbound, attempted a U-turn near the intersection to go back eastbound, and was hit by a westbound pickup.

The SUV’s driver was not hurt, but his passenger, a 50-year-old woman from China, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, Channel said. She said the 68-year-old Lawrence man driving the pickup was not hurt.

All three people involved were wearing seat belts, Channel said.
