Letter to the editor: Not professional

To the editor:

I am saddened and offended by Tom Keegan’s derogatory name calling in his article covering KU’s hiring of a new athletic director, in which he referenced coach David Beaty. “Lame-duck football coach” is the term Keegan used to describe our coach. Wow, what professionalism! No matter what Keegan’s personal feelings are about coach Beaty and KU’s football program (which he has made known numerous times in his articles), as a sports writer for a newspaper he should at the very least take the high road and be professional. I for one am a huge KU football supporter and have supported the program for 23 years now. Foolish? I don’t think so. From the day that coach Mark Mangino was fired, the football program went downhill (polite term)! So many things done so very wrong. Building a strong football program is no easy task and takes years. Coach Beaty started from zero and in no way, shape or form has he been a “lame-duck football coach.” I want KU football to be great again, as do so many others. Is coach Beaty the one to take us there? Perhaps not, but he’s given it one heck of a try and I greatly respect him for that. Ask the team what they think of coach Beaty. I would be willing to bet that not one member would use the degrading term used by Tom Keegan. Shame on you!

Carol Delp,

Lawrence
