Vinland Airport owner makes emergency plane landing in resident’s yard

The owner of Vinland Airport was forced to make an emergency landing Saturday in a private yard near the airport.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash report, David McFarlane, 67, of Baldwin City, was practicing engine-fail maneuvers shortly before noon Saturday in a rebuilt 1970 Cessna near the Vinland Airport when the plane’s engine failed to restart.

McFarlane attempted to turn the plane and land at the airport but lost altitude. He then attempted to land the plane in a bean field but landed in the yard of a private residence, struck a wooden fence and came to rest in a field. He was not injured in the incident, according to the highway patrol.
