To the editor:

Dear President Trump:

I am a fairly liberal Democrat, but I am writing you with concern for your reputation. You consider yourself a real “winner.” But news reports show that you have associated yourself with proven, consistent “losers.” You surely don’t want to have your reputation linked to absolute losers? We needn’t classify you by what you say, but your actions clearly show you to be a white supremacist: You want a wall between the U.S. and Mexico and you are attempting to generally bar immigration from populations that are other than white.

Mr. President, white supremacists have always lost since 1865. They lost catastrophically then and lost every big battle through following centuries. They lost in 1948 when the “Dixiecrats” abandoned the Democratic Party, and then they lost when President Truman integrated the U.S. military. They lost in 1957 when Little Rock schools were integrated, and they lost the next year when Brown v. Board of Education came before the Supreme Court. They lost in Alabama in 1963. Then they lost in 1965 with passage of the Civil Rights Act backed by a southern president. In 1968, recognition of equality for African Americans became part of the tumult of that time. In this 21st century apparently a majority of the population of the U.S. believes in equality of all people. (If more than a very small minority of the population favors white supremacy, they lack the courage to say so.) I don’t see any wins at all. Surely, sir, you don’t want to be associated with them. So I respectfully ask that you “get on the winning side” and we can all look forward to a winning future.
