Letter to the editor: Flouting the law

To the editor:

As the appointed and elected officials of several states and communities bluster and avow to defy federal laws concerning marijuana use and immigration, while not mounting any concerted effort to change the law, we, “the community of the Meyer clan,” have determined that it is acceptable for our ‘community’ to ignore, fail to comply with, or outright defy any local, state or federal laws that we find distasteful, onerous or offensive (marijuana, tax, speed limits or immigration). We know what is right for our ‘community’ and the rest of the area can go about its business in the manner that it chooses. Following the lead of those officials (West Coasters are fond of saying: “As California goes, so goes the nation”), we will go our own way. A Seattle official said, “We will not be bullied by Washington, or any other governmental authority.” California stated, “We will decide what is appropriate within our own borders.”

If they have the right to flout federal law, then we can do the same, as we see fit. While they claim to be following the will of the people, they are in fact, stating that laws only apply if they want them to. That brings us back, once again, to the issue of state’s rights. Let chaos reign.

Like it or not, government officials are sworn to uphold the laws of this country. If you don’t like a law, get a consensus and change it.
