LEAVENWORTH — A northeast Kansas man is accused of beating the family dog and burning her with a propane torch.

The Kansas City Star reports that 57-year-old Lemuel Dean Hunter Jr. was charged Wednesday with a felony count of cruelty to animals. His bond has been set at $10,000.

Leavenworth Police say they were called to a home Monday and were told by someone there that a relative, now identified as Hunter, was abusing the family dog. Police say the 3-year-old corgi and beagle mix was struck with a board, kicked, choked and burned with a torch.

Hunter has denied the allegations and tells police he was trying to move the dog from one kennel to another.

Authorities say Leavenworth Animal Control evaluated the dog and kept her in their custody Wednesday.

If he is guilty, which would be easy to prove if the dog is burned, can they confiscate any guns he owns until he proves he isn't mentally unstable? Actually could they do that before he is found guilty? He could have them back if he proves he didn't hurt the dog. You do know that many mass murderers start out hurting animals.

I detest animal, or people, abuse. I hope this guy spends a long time in prison

If good ol' boy Lem is found guilty, it would certainly seem appropriate to strike HIM with a board, then kick, choke and 'gently' burn HIM with the same propane torch, all whilst trying to move HIM from one kennel to the next, and the next, and the next...re-filling the 'assisting torch' as neeeded...
