Zeke Mayo highlights sharpshooting in Lions’ win over SM South

OVERLAND PARK — “Oh my God!”

Lawrence High freshman Zeke Mayo couldn’t help but yell toward his team’s bench at the beginning of the second quarter. Never in his life did he shoot this well. He held his arms up and shrugged, his eyes wide with bewilderment.

After drilling his first four 3-pointers, Mayo took a few dribbles beyond the 3-point arc. When his defender took a step backward, Mayo launched a shot from near NBA range. Swish.

It was infectious. The Lions had their best shooting night of the season, making a total of 14 3-pointers. And they needed every single one of them in a 67-63 road victory against Shawnee Mission South.

“Man, that was a moment,” said Mayo, who finished with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting. “That was my fifth 3 in a row and I was feeling myself so I had to let something out.”

Playing against a zone defense, the Lions were confident they would have opportunities to fire away. They’ve just never had a night where every player was clicking. Savonni Shazor, a 6-foot-6 guard hit a pair of 3s in the first quarter. Senior Jake Rajewski (12 points) added three more in the third quarter.

At times this season, the LHS coaching staff has needed to limit the amount of 3-pointers because the Lions were shooting low percentages.

“The green light is on for everybody when it comes to rhythm 3s,” Lawrence coach Mike Lewis said. “Zeke is one of those obviously that played his way into good spacing and some good rhythm shots.”

The Lions (10-8, 7-4 in Sunflower League) played without Anthony Selden and Clarence King, who were both out with the flu. Lewis said four players missed Thursday’s practice because of illness, including Shazor who finished with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.

“I had to have a bigger role,” Shazor said. “My mom actually told me to step up and get some boards without Anthony.”

Despite the flurry of 3-pointers, the Raiders (9-9, 5-6) rallied in the second half when they made nine straight shots, cutting their deficit to three points after trailing by as many as 16 in the third quarter. The Raiders shot 6 of 13 from the 3-point line with 20 points from junior Jake Potthoff.

Lawrence followed with an 11-4 run near the start of the fourth quarter, highlighted by five points from junior point guard Trey Quartlebaum and another triple from Mayo. Rajewski, known as a catch-and-shoot type guard, even added a floater high off the backboard.

Then the Raiders punched back, holding the Lions to one point in a three-minute stretch. Lawrence made 2 of 5 free throws in the last 40 seconds, just enough to survive after SM South cut the score to 65-63.

“It felt great to finally finish out a game,” Shazor said, “because we’ve been struggling with that a lot.”
