Letter to the editor: Advice for Trump

February 9, 2018

To the editor:

According to the news reports today, Donald Trump wants to have a huge military parade down Pennsylvania Avenue on July 4 with troops, tanks and a lot of other military hardware to honor and support our troops. I would like to offer him a couple of suggestions for more effective ways to give support other than having a big showy parade march past his front door.

Mr. President, first of all, when you received that letter that so many of us got from the president back in the late ’60s stating that your country needed you for military service, you could have gone and served. That probably would have helped, and most of us did go and serve.

But not you, and now you want a parade.

Secondly, you could pay federal taxes. Now I know you told us all during the campaign that not paying taxes makes you “smart,” but the money that pays our soldiers’ wages and buys the equipment they need comes from Americans who pay their taxes. Most of us do pay our taxes.

Rhetoric and flag waving don’t really help that much.

I realize it is a little too late for you to make good on that first item, Mr. President, but how about helping the rest of us out on the second one? Sometimes actions really do speak louder than words.

Anybody got a picture of the uniforms Nixon made White House guards wear in 1970 ?

Those would be perfect military-uniforms for Trump's parade.

To convincingly play a third-world tinhorn, you want "your" military to look the part.

You mean when he dressed them up to look like soldiers from the mythical country Ruritania, based on the swashbuckler movie from his childhood, Prisoner of Zenda, in an attempt to make the military look more appealing to kids but of no relevance to kids in 1970?

Thanks, Ken ! That's the one.

A million or so American military outfitted that way, goose-stepping down Pennsylvania Avenue, will show America's enemies our Dear Leader means business...don't cross him.

Congenital Liberals are always so bitter and angry.

Too funny!!

Meanwhile, people parade downtown for Syed Jamal.

When is the next Gay Pride parade or the parade where Liberal females wear anatomical hats representing their intimate body parts happening?

"Congenital Liberals are always so bitter and angry."

Based on what you just wrote, you must be one of those "congenital Liberals".

Just another rant that adds nothing to the discussion of this LTE.

Thank you, Fred for pointing out the obvious: the emperor has no clothes.

The man's acceptable moral turpitude level was just beginning to show up on radar, perhaps just as frightening as Hawaii's most recent scare. On a related note, had he in fact joined the rest of us in Southeast Asia, and per my previous "friendly fire" post, in all likelihood he wouldn't have made it back to "drain the swamp", a swamp diametrically opposed to that insidious, aqueous, death-ridden nightmare the rest of us were trying to survive...what a guy, he.

Advice for President Trump ... Illegitimi non carborundum!

Too bad our current president didn't apply his genius sooner. Having his parade on an American patriotic holiday like Martin Luther King Day would be a perfect way to show his deep committment to America's highest ideals.

And maybe he should make Mexico pay for his parade.

It worked for his wall, didn't it ?

He should use all the funds left from his "yuge" inauguration!

So a gay pride parade featuring half-naked LBGTQ people is OK but a military parade on July 4th or Veterans' Day is taboo?

Back when God was in knickers, I marched with my high school band in the Memorial Day Parade. Do those parades still exist?

Steve Hicks 4 months, 1 week ago

The logic of how this relates to the current president's Ruritanian-fantasy military parade escapes me, Richard.

Logic seems to have escaped you too.

Better luck next time.

"If you are a conservative, one of the fun things about Donald Trump’s presidency is watching liberals lose their minds over how much they loathe him.

From media elites to members of Congress, progressives are often reduced to tantrum-like fits because they are so frustrated by living in the shadows of this establishment-busting, government-shrinking rebel of a president." Jean Card

Thanks Jean ... we see it in the comments daily!

In the words of Rand Paul, let's bring home the 14,000 troops in Afghanistan and have a victory parade.
