Letter to the editor: Destroying woods

To the editor:

Thank you for your article on the “clear-cut” of the woods in the lot at the corner of Crestline and Clinton Parkway. As I write this, the bulldozing of trees continues. Apparently the stand of trees falls under the city’s “sensitive lands” designation, but the city is taking no action against this rather insensitive destruction — one that has bulldozers working perilously close to a day care center.

This is par for the course for developers in Lawrence: flout the law and create “facts on the ground” that favor your project. If it means bulldozing some woods — or a historic building, or a neighborhood — then so be it. The owner is a shell company for a California investor; they don’t live here. And, after all, the city won’t do anything.
