Letter to the editor: Competing rights

To the editor:

“Gun found in backpack” was the headline on April 10.

Why was that student detained? Amendment II of the Constitution declares “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This student’s act was constitutional, not restricted by age requirements.

Was the student anxious about his/her security or the security of a Free State (high school)? How noble of him/her, if necessary, to be prepared to “fire” his/her gun to produce security!

“Gun-ocracy” pre-empts and does not respect the constitutional right to due process in Amendment VI.
