Letter to the editor: Wildlife vs. waste

To the editor:

In July 2017, I submitted a proposal to the Lawrence City Commission suggesting that they initiate a communitywide conversation addressing the city’s growing population and related traffic congestion, which greatly increases the impact on motorist, pedestrian and urban wildlife street safety issues.

After repeated attempts to elicit a reply from them I received word that my proposal had been distributed to the commission members and that I could expect their comments. That was in December 2017.

The Journal-World interviewed a city spokesperson for a related article raising many of these same issues. It was published in the paper Sept. 29, 2017.

The very clear takeaway message from this article was that the city considers any dead animals found on the city’s streets to be considered disposable waste. Again, I am still waiting for the City Commission’s promised comments on my July 2017 proposal. Meanwhile, these important safety issues are still waiting to be addressed.
