Letter to the editor: Self the true wizard

To the editor:

Your paean in the April 2 paper to the Jayhawks’ outstanding season was well considered and well deserved. However, I suggest a clarification.

You lauded the ‘Hawks’ NCAA record, 14th straight Big 12 championship, noting it surpassed the 13 straight won by the UCLA teams of the legendary John Wooden from 1967 to 1979. The “Wizard of Westwood” coached the Bruins from 1948 to 1975. Coach Wooden won the first nine of those championships, the next two were won under coach Gene Bartow and the last two under coach Gary Cunningham.

A recent sports section featured a story about Charles Barkley declaring that Bill Self doesn’t get enough respect and recognition. It is appropriate to recognize that his achievement of 14 straight championships (and counting) far surpasses any other Division 1 college basketball coach, including the Wizard. Congrats, Coach Self, and thank you!
