Letter to the editor: Privilege and penalty

To the editor:

Many of my fellow citizens have growing families but are homeless or unable to find affordable housing. I own my own home.

Paying property taxes is a privilege.

Many of my fellow citizens with growing families are unemployed or underemployed. I live comfortably on a pension.

Paying income taxes is a privilege.

Many of my fellow citizens with growing families spend most of their income on food. I spend relatively little. Paying additional sales tax on food is not a privilege.

It is a penalty.
