Letter to the editor: Candy caution

To the editor:

I take issue with what Lenore Skenazy said in her Lawrence Journal-World column on Oct. 23. She quoted a sociologist named Joe Best as not being able to find articles on poisoned Halloween candy since 1958. That may be true; however, there have been reports of people putting sharp objects or pins in or near Halloween candy. These reports are from past Halloweens, but they should be taken seriously. I suggest that people DO check their children’s collection of Halloween treats when they return home with their candy. It may not be poison, but it might be something else. It never hurts to be more careful.
