Letter to the editor: Decorating graves

To the editor:

I disagree with the letter to the editor that stated that the graves at Memorial Park are not decorated. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 852 has been placing flags on veterans’ graves for over 40 years; I have placed flags on graves that long. If the individual has a veteran that is not on our list, he/she needs to contact us. While I am walking back and forth through a section of the cemetery, I always place flags on veterans’ head stones, regardless of if they are currently on our list. I make a note, so they are on the list for the following year. Our formal ceremonies are held at the designated veterans’ area. I have helped put up the Avenue of Flags. We only put them up when it is not supposed to rain; we start at 5 a.m. on Memorial Day. Would the individual want to help us?

Thanks for your reaching out and doing this wonderful thing for over 40 years! Sounds like your list is the go-to list and I hope there are younger ones joining you in your annual efforts. I just sent the VFW website a comment to see if my Dad is on your list by going to your website: https://vfw852.com/contact/ and also see you have a Facebook page: www.facebook.com/VFW852

Thank you Ken for your support in this effort. I will make sure we check our lists for your father. Do you happen to know what section he is buried at?

Ila, thank you for your steadfast acknowledgement of our Veterans!

Thank you Louis - appreciate your comment. It is the least we can do to honor our past Veterans.

Thank you for your work in honoring our veterans. I know I always check my dad and uncles graves (in Ottawa) on Memorial Day to make sure they haven't been forgotten.
