LHS girls soccer dropped against SMNW

? Prior to Tuesday’s regional game against Shawnee Mission Northwest, Lawrence High girls soccer coach Matt McCune talked to his players about slowing down SMNW midfielder Megan Nugent.

But all the Lions could do was watch when Nugent hooked a pair of shots into the back of the net from more than 30 yards away.

Instead, the Lions just wished they could’ve converted on some of their own opportunities in a 3-1 loss to the Cougars at Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex, ending their season in the first round of the Class 6A regionals.

“We knew going in that (Nugent) had speed, and that she had a quick shot and a hard shot,” McCune said. “It’s been kind of the scouting report on us all year. I think the majority of the goals have come from distance.”

Lawrence senior Skylar Drum scored the team’s lone goal with 5:20 remaining when sophomore Anna Chieu danced around a couple of defenders and fired a cross into the box. Drum, who was double teamed whenever she was around the ball, pushed a header into the back of the net.

“It was all Anna,” said Drum, who has signed to play at Central Missouri. “She had a great cross and it was just perfect to where I could head it.”

The Lions, who ended the season with a 6-10-1 record, certainly had some scoring opportunities before Drum’s late goal.

In the first half, sophomore Leslie Ostronic had a long-distance shot after a scrum on a corner kick that SMNW goalkeeper Courtney Jones tipped over the net.

Chieu added a laser shot from more than 25 yards away, which deflected off of the crossbar and bounced straight down, but didn’t roll into the net. Sophomore Sofie Christiansen added other opportunities, trying to sprint past defenders.

The Courgars (11-4-2) were close on some of their misses, but made sure to convert on their long-range shots. Nugent scored a goal in each half and Alaina DeVolder added another long-distance missile that hooked into the net over the outstretched arms of LHS senior goalkeeper Olivia Lemus (six saves).

“They just had some amazing shots,” LHS senior Carson Drake said. “(Nugent) had some rockets. Olivia couldn’t have done anything about them. They were just amazing goals, so props to her. We just didn’t convert on what we should have converted on.”

The Cougars took 21 shots but only nine landed on net with Lawrence defenders Ostronic, Katelyn McIntire, Bess Davison, Banner Williams and Taeghan Sharpe preventing runs and crosses into the box.

Despite the season-ending loss, LHS seniors were proud of the team’s progress during the past few seasons.

“There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the program,” Drake said. “I think a lot of that has to do with coach McCune and the success that we’ve had.”
