Letter to the editor: Russia probe

To the editor:

I’m really disappointed with the fight against Russia leaks.

We can fight about the extent to which they happened at this point, but not whether or not they did happen.

Trump’s administration and every single member of Congress needs to throw their entire weight behind this investigation with speed and determination.

Democrats want to get to the bottom of things. Republicans should want to clear their names. Either way we’re two sides of the same coin fighting over something that should actually be the greatest chance to mend partisanship in decades.

If not, if we head into the 2018 elections like this, the damage will be severe. If this issue still breeds partisanship on the Hill, if the American citizens still resent and mistrust the “other side,” then we will be compromised again. It’s already happening again in Europe. We are vulnerable and have not reacted with strength to this event.

If it happens again in the midst of this mistrust, that’s it. It will take a generation to get our democracy back to any level worthy of trust in the eyes of the citizens. When we lose our faith in the vote and its results, we lose the single greatest card we have to play in the world.

American identity will be gone, and most importantly that vacuum will be

filled by another power.
