Letter to the editor: Unjust law

To the editor:

The current law making individual property owners responsible for maintenance of sidewalks is unjust. As stated by the Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods, sidewalks should be treated the same as other infrastructure such as streets, bicycle lanes, sewers and street lights. It is time to remove the old law and the city to assume its responsibilities.

I currently do not have a sidewalk on my property, but it is a part of the city infrastructure that I would be willing to support. This sentiment was written prior to the Journal-World article of March 23 stating that my street is on the list to have a sidewalk built this spring/summer. At 98, I will not use it but will need to remove snow, etc. Whether or not there is a sidewalk on my street, I consider it part of city infrastructure that should be maintained by the city. In short, if it is built by the city, it should be maintained by the city.
