Letter to the editor: Fool us twice

To the editor:

In response to Scott Burkhart’s March 24 letter defending President Trump, he “gushes” in praise of Trump’s ability to “take charge and manage” (whatever that means). Mr. Burkhart feels Mr. Trump has “traits” (but doesn’t name them) to be a great president based on his business background (including bankruptcy).

“America” is not a business; the president is not our “CEO,” and we are not a “for profit entity.” He is the person Americans put our trust in to act in our best national interest and keep our country safe.

Americans do not respond well to “bullying,” nor do we appreciate being lied to. Mr. Trump has already displayed both of these traits, and his claim of voter fraud by 3 million voters and his accusation that President Obama wire-tapped Trump Tower both have proved to be lies.

An old saying goes “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” How can we Americans ever believe anything Trump says in the

future? If he lies once, how can we believe he will be telling the truth next time, especially in a case where we might have to send troops off to fight a war President Trump claims is necessary — a war where Americans will lose their lives!

Another older, wiser saying goes “When somebody tells you who they are … believe them.”
