Letter to the editor: Presidential standards

To the editor:

In reference to Kenneth Mackenzie’s recent letter, I have to laugh every time someone says we should give Donald Trump a chance to lead. “Chance” implies uncertainty, as if there were some question whether Trump can do the job, and I agree there is certainly some question. We should and do give people a chance to play first chair in orchestra, to try out for roles in movies and to pitch deals on “Celebrity Apprentice.” We should never give anyone “a chance” to pilot a 767, perform brain surgery or try his hand at leading the free world.

And yet, that is precisely what we have done. Since those of us who oppose Trump haven’t actually staged a coup, he is indeed getting his “chance” to be president.

Mackenzie says that in his estimation, Trump is doing “rather well” in keeping his promises. If he means Trump has made a big show of it, I guess I can agree. Trump has pretended to defend against terrorism, he has pretended to have a good replacement for Obamacare and he has pretended to bring jobs back to the United States. He really is a great pretender.

Some of us, though, have higher standards. We will continue to criticize this unworthy pretender to president. We will continue to resist until we have a president who works on behalf of all Americans, not just his rich cronies. We will continue until we have a president who is worthy of the title.
