Letter to the editor: Thanks, Lawrence

To the editor:

My husband has a sweet nostalgia for Lawrence. He loved his college days at KU. We live in the Kansas City area now but visit Lawrence often.

Last Saturday evening Jim and I were celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary. After dinner at Merchants Pub, I suggested we walk around downtown a little. We hadn’t walked more than a few blocks down Massachusetts when Jim caught the toe of his shoe in a sidewalk crack and went down like a felled tree. Blood pooled in his eyes and dribbled from his face. Then, as suddenly and unexpectedly as the fall, helping hands appeared. Someone offered to call 911. A young firefighter EMT held Jim’s head still and straight while a young nurse wiped blood away to better evaluate his injuries. A passerby offered a large clean towel and another good Samaritan ran to get a pillow. The police and ambulance arrived quickly. Jim was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where a CT scan showed no brain bleed (Jim takes blood thinners); just a lot of bruises, scrapes and a broken nose. In time Jim will heal and his face will just have taken on more “character.”

For all those who offered assistance and showed care and concern, THANK YOU!

I think I’m beginning to see why Jim loves Lawrence.
