Letter to the editor: Seniors, vote no

August 11, 2017

To the editor:

Recently Lawrence officials stated that the city and county should become a haven for retirees. But now the city and county officials want to raise taxes again, which will hurt these same seniors they want to attract and especially those on fixed incomes and Social Security.

I would suggest that all seniors vote no on any tax increases, until such time as the officials remove the excessive taxes on food. That would show that officials want seniors here and are concerned about their well-being.

I vote no to any tax increases, when given a chance. The problem is the tax increases are done by the legislature and city and county commissioners. The only votes we have are to retain them in office or not. Occasionally a tax increase is put to a public vote, and I always vote no on those. I agree that seniors are being taxed off of their property, and Lawrence is the last place I would move to, due to the high taxes.

You also forgot the water/sewer (water run off fees) increase the city wants to Levey on everyone. So much for affordable housing and attracting retirees to Lawrence!!

Time to vote these yahoos out!!

Most cities compare the winter time water use to the summer time auto sprinkler system use ( a use that never enters Sanitary Sewer Systems to be treated ) and adjusts their sewer bill to reflect the difference .

I would agree that having a rain sensor on a yard sprinkler system to stop it from running in the rain is smart nor does it hurt to supervise a sprinkler system closer to not over water grass which might make the roots go shallow....but i also assume that cities make more money from increased water use when they sell water in the summertime that pays (?) for fixing their systems year around as water use probably runs double during a summer day than it does during a winter day .

Simply said water and sewer rates are skyrocketing nationwide because our systems are aging out into failure modes and the folks who paid for them originally and left us their gifts maybe 50 to 100 years ago are dead and not paying for our pleasures anymore .

The end of the nineties was seventeen years ago and the people responsible for the misconstructed water lines of the 90s here in Lawrence are already out of here .

Temper tantrums every four years ( or whenever ) is not going to provide a fix for what is breaking down all around us .

KCMO has a 100 yr plan to replace all of their water mains ( tell that to their 3000 miles of pipe or so that they are busy adding to yearly that may not break down on schedule ) and water rates and sewer rates there are expectedly going thru the roof !

If Trump wants to do infrastructure nation wide he has no further to look than to beneath his nose to our underground and the stuff that cities nationwide count on that needs rebuilding and is driving people to distraction nation wide over their water and sewer bills .

Earth to Congress....and it would make jobs too .

Maybe it is time for a Proposition 13 proposal in Lawrence...
