Letter to the editor: Passing on taxes

To the editor:

We are landlords in Lawrence. According to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines, our housing is affordable and always has been. Unfortunately, we will have to raise the amount of rent our tenants pay because of increased taxes. In order to not raise our rents, I suggest the city (and the county?) reduce personal property taxes for landlords who provide affordable housing. To start, the $300,000 left in the housing trust fund could be used this year as an incentive for affordable housing providers not to raise rents.
