Letter to the editor: Will miss Channel 6

August 2, 2017

To the editor:

I would like to thank Lawrence’s Channel 6 for 45 years of great news, weather, sports and entertainment programming. As a resident and cable subscriber for over 25 years, I’ve enjoyed and appreciated the fine work that Channel 6 has always done in covering area news and events. There will be a large hole left in this community when the channel goes dark. There will be one less member of the Fourth Estate to hold local officials accountable for their actions, which is unfortunate.

It was especially delightful to watch new interns and reporters grow from unsure beginners to confident, assured journalists, many of whom were quickly hired by larger markets. Channel 6 did an excellent job of balancing hard news with general interest stories from around the area.

I’m not sure where I’ll turn at 6 p.m., but I know that I’ll miss Channel 6 for a long time to come. Thank you to everyone at Channel 6, past and present, for being there to cover Lawrence and Douglas County for 45 years.

Shutting down local news by new and larger owners is for some reason part of rather conservative move by new owners.

It has always troubled me as to how new owners can find financing no matter the cost to buy out local markets.

WE local taxpayers may want to encourage city hall to be for this community another choice. Whereby service would be top of line which could be an attraction for new business ventures. Of course we would expect city hall to hire the best management and technicians available to we the taxpayers.

This constant turnover is not doing our wallets or service any favors.
