Investigators: House fire that killed 95-year-old Lawrence resident was accidental

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department responded to a fire at 810 Wellington Road, Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Fire crews pulled a woman from the home but were unable to revive her, and she died at the scene.

A house fire that killed a woman Tuesday on Wellington Drive began accidentally in the kitchen, fire officials said Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Hazel Stellmacher, 95, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief Eve Tolefree said.

The fire was ruled accidental, according to a department news release.

It was caused by combustible materials too close to a heating source, specifically cloth materials near the oven, Tolefree said. She said the house had a smoke detector that was “maintained” but that it did not function at the time of the fire.

Tolefree said there was not an explanation for the smoke detector not functioning and that she did not have more information about how the fire ignited.

Damage from the fire was estimated to be $150,000, according to the department.

The fire was reported about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday at 810 Wellington Drive.

After seeing smoke and flames through the window, neighbors said they called 911 and tried to enter the house to rescue Stellmacher but could not because the smoke was already too thick.

When firefighters arrived they pulled Stellmacher from the house but were unable to revive her, and she died at the scene.

“The Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical department would like to remind everyone to preplan an escape route in their homes and ensure smoke detectors are operable,” the department said in Wednesday’s news release.
