LHS soccer lands 3-2 comeback win over Falcons

Lawrence High sophomore Evann Seratte (19) runs toward her teammates after scoring the game-winning goal on an assist for senior Skylar Drum (18) in the Lions' 3-2 overtime win over Olathe South on Tuesday at LHS.

In the 11th minute of the Lawrence High girls soccer team’s match on Tuesday against Olathe South, LHS senior Skylar Drum sent a cross to the far post that sophomore Evann Seratte just missed drilling home for an equalizer.

The scoring chance was one of very few that the Lions had in the first half, but they started to gain momentum in the final 25 minutes, and eventually found the back of the net twice to send the match to overtime.

Two-and-a-half minutes into the first extra period, Drum sent a pass to Seratte from nearly the exact same spot, and the LHS sophomore connected on it to give the Lions a 3-2 comeback win over the Falcons at LHS.

“I definitely think we wanted it more,” Seratte said. “I think I was just ready to score that time. Sky made a great pass.”

The Lions (2-8) fell into a 2-0 hole after allowing goals in the first five minutes of each half. Haleigh Harris ripped a shot into the upper-90 in the third minute, and Alex Dayton scored on a penalty kick to give the Falcons a two-goal edge.

While the Lions were unable to muster much momentum until midway through the second half, they never felt like they were out of it. A large part of the Lions’ confidence had to do with the performance from senior goalkeeper Olivia Lemus, who made 11 saves.

“The PK, she had her hands on it. There was one where she (Olathe South freshman Sydney McCoy) struck it from probably 20 yards out and it took a little deflection and Olivia was going one way and adjusted in the air. It was an unbelievable save,” LHS coach Matt McCune said. “She hasn’t had goalkeeper training. She’s just a natural athlete. She was amazing that second half.”

The scoring chances began to mount for the Lions as they earned four corner kicks between the 55th and 65th minutes. During that stretch, the Lions were awarded a penalty kick because of a handball by Olathe South’s Kaley Dalinghaus in the box. Lawrence was unable to capitalize, though, as Falcons goalie Rachel Engeman saved the shot off the right foot of LHS senior Carson Drake in the 58th minute.

The Lions had another golden opportunity when Drum split two defenders just inside of the box, but her shot went wide to keep the deficit at 2-0 in the 65th minute.

Lawrence finally broke through in the 74th when sophomore Sofie Christiansen beat Olathe South defender Alexa Evans to a 50-50 ball, and pushed it back Engeman from just outside of the 6-yard box.

The Lions kept the foot on the gas in the final five minutes, and Drum tied it up with 2:11 to play. Engeman mis-read Drum’s shot from 25 yards out, and couldn’t collect herself in time to prevent the equalizer.

Once the match went to overtime, Drum didn’t have a doubt that the Lions were going to come away with the victory.

“We knew that we weren’t 2-0 worse than they were. We just wanted it more,” Drum said. “After we got those two goals, you could tell the atmosphere just switched. The momentum was with us.”
