Letter to the editor: Keep city auditor

To the editor:

Thank you for your continuing coverage of the Lawrence city budget debate.

I am willing to pay more in taxes for a city auditor because the auditor makes sure I’m getting my money’s worth for my taxes.

The auditor provides oversight of the city manager’s budget. How convenient it would be, then, for the city manager to do away with the auditor. The auditor, Michael Eglinski, wants stricter vetting of tax incentive packages; Tom Markus, by contrast, favors more laxity in this regard. So it looks bad when Marcus wants to cut Eglinski’s position.

I don’t know what’s “traditional” up in Iowa City, but, here, it includes fiscal responsibility. Let’s keep the city auditor on the job.
