Letter to the editor: GOP winner?

To the editor:

There is a lot of political discourse these days. One of the most distressing to me is the selection of the current Republican candidate for president of the United States, commander in chief of the U.S. Military and leader of the free world.

He states that he “won” all those primaries and is entitled to the nomination. I disagree.

I do not have specifics before me, but in nearly all the primary contests he rarely won over 30 percent of the vote. This is, of course, because the field was diluted by the presence of many candidates besides the current nominee.

He won a plurality, not a majority, in those contests.

The problem here is the presence of many candidates that diluted the results and as a result the “winner” was in reality far from the primary choice of a majority of voters.

The answer would have been a runoff election to the top two or possibly three contestants. This would provide a more realistic outcome.

As it stands now, most of his Republican party members are repulsed by the character and demeanor of their “candidate.”

A runoff election would have corrected this discrepancy and perhaps a more civil and acceptable candidate would be nominated for the highest office in the world.
