Letter: Important hire

To the editor:

I live a few blocks from Kasold Drive and work at 1330 Kasold. I travel the road at least twice and sometimes six, eight, or 10 times a day. As I read about the controversy about the proposed changes to Kasold Drive, I am aware that these changes might impact my daily life.

I couldn’t care less.

Whether there are two lanes, eight lanes, or a ski lift from Sixth Street to Bob Billings, I will find some way to get to work, and our congregation will find some way to get to church. But for so many Lawrencians, this issue pales in comparison with whether they have access to mental health treatment, where they can afford to live and whether their children are cared for and healthy. I think that most in our city understand these priorities. A recent “Lawrence Listens” poll on the city’s website rated “experience with social issues (e.g. mental health, homelessness, and affordable housing)” among the top two most important qualities for the city manager position.

We in the leadership of Justice Matters were pleased that the advertised job description for the city manager seeks someone with ” experience with social issues such as homelessness and mental health.” The city manager’s influence cannot be underestimated. While three commission seats open every two years, Lawrence has had only three city managers in the last 45 years. This may be the most important decision our commissioners will make during their time in office. They are in our prayers.
