Letter: Marriage equality

To the editor:

We were saddened to learn that the state of Kansas is denying the full recognition of the marriages of two same-gender couples in not allowing both parents to be listed on their child’s birth certificate. (“Same-sex couples take birth certificate cases to federal court,” Journal-World, Oct. 5)

One of the couples, Jessica and Casey Smith, are members of the church we serve. Plans are underway to celebrate the baptism of their son. On that day, we will invite his parents forward where we will ask the couple, “Will you love your child as God loves you?” Jessica and Casey will say, “Yes.” What we grieve is that the state of Kansas cannot say “yes” to them, to see them both as parents of their beloved child.

We feel for all same-gender couples who continue to live in a world that discriminates against them. The biblical call to justice and compassion (to love one’s neighbor as oneself) provides the mandate for marriage equality. As United Church of Christ pastors we have said and believed this for many, many years and we would like to repeat it here. This denial by the state of Kansas does not uphold this call. We, therefore, strongly disagree with the state and urge it to take immediate action on behalf of the Smith family.

Marriage equality means what it says: equality not only on their wedding day, but every day.
