Ammann lifts LHS gymnasts

Gymnasts from Lawrence High and Free State get fired up before their meet Wednesday evening at LHS. The Lions hosted Olathe East, Olathe Northwest and Free State in a gymnastics quad.

Lawrence High senior gymnast Ashley Ammann wasn’t nervous before her events Wednesday at the LHS quadrangular on Senior Night.

Ammann didn’t have time to be nervous. She’s on the homecoming court and was needed at the school’s Rally Around the Lion event, so she quickly rushed through each event, going whenever there was an opening.

The rush didn’t affect Ammann, who took fourth place in the all-around and was fifth in the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise to lead the Lions to second place in the team standings.

“It was very hectic,” Ammann said. “It kind of cut those (nerves) down. But it was tiring. I still enjoyed it.”

On the balance beam, Ammann was surrounded by dozens of her friends just a few feet away. She avoided any falls and scored an 8.6.

“The whole time, I was like, ‘They are watching me,'” Ammann said with a laugh. “Besides that, it’s really nice to have support here.”

Ammann, the lone LHS senior, was honored before the meet on the floor with her parents.

“(Ammann) means everything to this team,” LHS and FSHS coach Brooke Kissinger said. “She’s my leader. She’s somebody who has been around ever since I’ve been around. She’s always been my right-hand man when I need somebody to do something. I’m going to miss her a lot.”

The Lions received strong scores from junior Jordyn Leon and freshman Eden Kingery throughout the meet. Leon medaled in all-around (sixth place) for the first time in her high school career. She also tied for sixth in the uneven bars after adding a new skill — a switch kip.

“I’ve actually been working on it for a while,” Leon said of the skill when she turns around on the bars while moving. “The momentum and the adrenaline kind of helped me. This was like the first time I was actually nervous doing bars in a really long time.”

Kingery took fifth place in all-around, fourth on the floor exercise and vault, and tied for sixth on the balance beam.

“She’s doing much better,” Kissinger said of Kingery. “Now we’ve really got her skills down, and she’s starting to connect them, which was the big thing before.”

Free State finished third in the team standings behind senior Callie Hicks, who earned first place on the balance beam, second on the bars and third on the vault.

FSHS freshman Yasmine Jakmouj added ninth-place finishes on the vault and bars, while junior Landon Prideaux took ninth in the floor exercise.

Both schools will compete in the Newton Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday.
