Letter: Thoughtful motorists

To the editor:

My son and I were returning home from a visit to the cemetery on Memorial Day afternoon. As we reached the intersection of 13th and Massachusetts we saw a little dog hit by a car as she ran across the street. My son stopped and got out of our car, as did the two men who had unavoidably hit the dog. The dog attempted to get up, but couldn’t and was visibly trembling. The three men formed a circle and inched slowly to get the dog out of the street and my son was the one who carefully picked her up.

The amazing thing to me was that this was an extremely busy intersection — especially on Memorial Day — yet all the cars in each direction, stopped until the dog and her rescuers were out of the intersection! We are all busy, we all have things to do and places to go, and I was so touched with the actions of those motorists and so proud to be a resident of Lawrence.

The dog’s tag said her name was Ruby and there were two cell numbers on it. We contacted them and they were looking for her and were quite upset. They left quickly to take her to the vet. We are hoping that Ruby is OK now.
