FSHS boys, LHS girls take regional track titles

Lawrence High's JD Woods, left, runs side-by-side with Free State's Avin Lane in the 100 meter race during the state regional track meet held Friday at Free State.

Free State High’s boys track and field team was trailing by 10 points in the team standings at Friday’s Class 6A regional meet with two events remaining.

In the 3,200 meters, FSHS senior Ryan Liston and junior Tanner Hockenbury finished in the top two spots, with Hockenbury edging a runner from Shawnee Mission East by 0.05 seconds. The Firebirds added a third-place finish in the 4×400 relay to clinch their first regional championship since 2006.

The Firebirds, who beat runner-up Shawnee Mission West, 115-106, celebrated by dumping water and ice from a cooler over their coach, Jordan Rose.

“We’ve progressed so much, not only in our distance team, but our sprinters have really shown up,” said Hockenbury, who qualified for his first event at state as an individual. “We have some amazing throwers this year. All of us have really come together as a team and worked together.”

Free State’s boys team received a big boost from regional champions, Liston in the 1,600, junior Ethan Donley in the 800 and senior Nicholas Hocking in the discus. Senior Tye Carter added a runner-up finish in the javelin, sophomore Zack Sanders was third in the 110 and 300 hurdles, and the 4×100 relay took second place.

“One of my goals has been that I really want to get both teams in that top-three space,” Rose said. “I was excited to see that. I didn’t really check the team results until right there at the very end, so seeing that was fun, and I knew the guys would be very excited to get some of their time now.”

Lawrence High’s girls track and field team also added a regional championship, its second straight title.

The Lions were led by senior Jensen Edwards, who qualified for state in four events: the 400, 800, 4×100 relay and 4×400 relay. She set a personal-record when she won a regional title in the 400 (58.45) and took second place in the 800.

“I didn’t really know what I was doing,” Edwards said of the 800, running in the event for the first time in her career. “I ran it one time in practice. It’s an interesting race. It’s a lot different than what I’m used to with sprints and stuff. But I think it’s good. It’ll be good.”

The Lions’ 4×100 relay — Edwards, sophomore Myah Yoder, senior Marissa Pope and junior Kyleigh Severa — broke its own school record, set at state last year with a time of 49.46.

Severa also won the long jump, Pope added a runner-up finish in the 400, and Yoder was third in the 200. In the 4×400, subbing in senior Leah Gabler for Yoder, the two-time defending state champions won in a season-best time of 3:57.35.

“What I like most about them is they are dedicated to an idea,” LHS coach Jack Hood said of the five girls running relays, “dedicated to the idea of being the best that they can be and trying to win a state title. You put the kind of talent they have with the motivation and work ethic they have, they do special stuff.”

LHS senior Rebecca Finley swept the discus and shot put titles, edging her twin sister, Matia, in both events. In the discus, Rebecca Finley won by half an inch.

Free State’s girls finished runner-up to LHS, 115.5-107. Senior Gabbi Dabney won in the 100 hurdles, senior Kiara Clark was second in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and sophomore Emily Venters qualified for state in three events: the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

“I’m pretty happy with it,” said Venters, who set a personal record in the 800 despite battling shin splints. “That’s what I wanted to do because I want to triple at state. I get to do that again like last year, and I’m really excited that I get this opportunity again.”

Lawrence High’s boys finished in third with 80 points. Junior JD Woods swept the 100 and 200 meter dashes, edging FSHS sophomore Avin Lane by a few thousandths of a second in the 100. The 4×100 relay — Woods, Tae Shorter, Trey Moore and J’Mony Bryant — added a regional title, Shorter won in the triple jump, and junior Amani Bledsoe won in the discus, setting a personal record with a throw of 50 feet, 4 inches.

“It’s pretty exciting because I finally got that 50 (foot) mark down,” Bledsoe said. “I’ve been struggling with that for a while in practice. Hitting it, just seeing it, just ready to get it down in a meet, and I finally did. It’s really exciting.”

Shorter, a senior who has been battling injuries this year, also took third place in the long jump. In his victory in the triple jump, he leapt a season-best 44 feet, 1.5 inches.

“Today, I took some Advil, man,” Shorter said. “I couldn’t feel my knees. So as soon as I got out there, I said I was just going to jump as far as I could. Coach just told me to push it.”
