LHS wins golf regional title, FSHS third

Lawrence High's Dawson Dykes watches his drive from the tee box of the first hole during the 6A golf regionals, Monday, May 18, 2015 at Alvamar Golf Course.

Lawrence High boys golfers surrounded the scoreboard after their rounds at the Class 6A regional on Monday at Alvamar Golf Course and did their best to calculate team scores with their hands or cell-phone calculators.

They were one of the first teams to finish, so all they could do was wait. And wait some more.

Once the final group walked off the green, they knew what they had accomplished. The Lions won a regional championship, edging runners-up Olathe Northwest and Free State by one stroke. It was the first tournament win of the season for LHS, qualifying for the 6A state tournament next week. The Firebirds also qualified for state by finishing in third place.

LHS senior Brent Cahwee accepted the first-place plaque at the medal ceremony before handing it to his teammates — Cole Brungardt, Dawson Dykes, Braxton Olson, Jack Ryan and Garrett Wildeman. They all celebrated by kissing the plaque before passing it on to the next teammate.

It was Lawrence’s first regional title since 2003.

“Oh my god, it’s great,” Dykes said. “I don’t know what else would have been better.”

The Lions were led by Dykes, who shot an 82 for sixth place individually. Wildeman followed with a 83 for seventh place. Brungardt added an 86, and Olson shot an 87.

“I had a couple of ridiculously long putts, like a 50-footer and a couple of 30-footers,” Dykes said. “Just ridiculously long putts. Usually my shorter putts, I’ll make a lot more than I did today. But not long putts. That was definitely a blessing.”

“Dawson has really played well, pretty much the whole season,” LHS coach Dirk Wedd added. “Garrett, he’s like this team. He’s just gotten better and better. I think he opened the season at 92, 93, and he’s just worked and worked. He’s very consistent now. Easy swing, keeps it on the fairway and doesn’t throw away a lot of strokes.”

The Lions were 14 strokes better at the LHS Invitational last week, which was also held at Alvamar. The wind and wet greens played a factor, along with the added pressure of competing at regionals.

“The wind was really different,” said Wildeman, who had a strong day with his irons. “It threw a lot of my shots left and right, left some short, took some long. It did all sorts of stuff.”

The higher scores, compared to last week, only added to the nervousness by the Lions, who were just hoping their 338 would be good enough to go to state.

“Our three best golfers go double, double, triple (bogey) on 18,” Wedd said. “I thought, ‘We’re limping in.’ I felt like it was fingernails on a chalk board, just screeching down it. But we had enough to hang on, so that was good.”

Free State tied Olathe Northwest for second place with 339 strokes, but took third because of the fifth-highest score tiebreaker.

FSHS junior Jack Flynn took second place overall, firing a 76. He was the leader at 2-under par entering the 18th hole, but his best shot turned into his worst nightmare.

“I hit my 4-iron out of this world, and I just hit perfectly, straight into the water,” said Flynn, who had a double bogey on 18. “Best I’ve ever hit it, honestly.”

Despite the tough luck, Flynn carried the Firebirds after most of his teammates struggled on the back nine. Senior Matt Siler shot an 85, tying for 10th place, and senior Coleman Houk turned in an 87.

“I told (Siler) before the round started, ‘Don’t let this be your last tournament,'” FSHS coach Matt Gudenkauf said. “Even if we didn’t as a team, he would have as an individual. So he took care of that. He made sure he was going to play in the state tournament, which is really pretty neat.”

The 6A state tournament begins at 9 a.m. on May 26 at Carey Park in Hutchinson.
