Self named AP Big 12 coach of the year

Kansas head coach Bill Self and guard Kelly Oubre have a chat on the sideline during the first half on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014 at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Big 12 coaches and media members who cover the league saw things differently when it came to naming a conference coach of the year for 2014-15.

One day after learning that the coaches had pegged West Virginia’s Bob Huggins as the Big 12 coach of the year, Kansas University coach Bill Self learned during Monday morning’s Big 12 coaches teleconference that he had earned the award from the Associated Press.

Self, who guided the Jayhawks to an 11th consecutive regular season Big 12 title, won the honor for the fourth time and became the first Big 12 coach to do so.

As for the AP all-Big 12 team, that looked exactly like the coaches’ pick, with Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield winning player of the year honors and Rico Gathers (Baylor), Perry Ellis (Kansas), Juwan Staten (West Virginia) and Georges Niang (Iowa State) rounding out the first team.

Stay tuned for more on Self’s latest honor.

The Jayhawks (24-7 overall, 13-5 Big 12) will spend the week preparing for the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, where KU, the top seed, will open at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday’s 8-9 match-up between Kansas State and TCU.
