Letter: Audit whitewash

To the editor:

I’ve been an attorney for over 40 years. In that period of time, I’ve studied and dissected an uncountable number of audit reports. The report made by auditor Warren Hudson on the Rock Chalk project strikes me as one of the most unprofessional reports I’ve ever encountered.

Auditors report facts. They do not praise or blame. They don’t kiss anyone’s shoes. They don’t say that the entity being audited “performed more due diligence than I have ever seen,” particularly since the entity is also the hiring agency, and the facts show that an amazing lack of due diligence caused this furor. They don’t say things like “I’m not entirely sure why…”, as Hudson did several times. If he’s not entirely sure why certain actions were taken, then this is a negative finding and should be reported as such. For some peculiar reason, the auditor states that he could not find a comparable project. How about checking with Kansas City or Topeka? I’ll wager he would find a dozen.

This audit is a whitewash, nothing more.
